This year the EU*Asia Institute of ESSCA School of Management is celebrating its 15th anniversary. Since its beginnings it has focused its work on European Studies and relations to Asia, in which two main research topics are nowadays Sustainability and Innovation policies. This year’s “Newcomers’ conference” took place online on 4th March, 2021 and was the occasion to welcome 4 new members who presented their research during this webinar.

Dr Anastas Vangeli

“Normative Shift in the West? European and American Economic Policy Responses to Global China and the Future of the Liberal Economic Order”

Anastas Vangeli presented an advanced research proposal that deals with the normative shifts in the West, especially the US and the EU, that have happened as a reaction to the rise of global China. In his future work he intends to investigate to what extent this shift  only concerns China and to what extent it has real paradigmatic consequences  when it comes to rethinking the global economy.

Dr Paul André

« Competitive strategies at statist level  in international relations and their consequences on corporate strategies »

Paul André followed up with his research topic emphasizing the coopetition between China, South Korea and Japan as global economic leaders. His analysis of this trilateral relationship in North East Asia made a close connection with the previous presentation.

Prof Thomas Amadieu

« The Dynamics of Construction of the Responsible Consumer: A Comparison of Gambling Addiction in China and France »

Thomas Amadieu presented an ongoing research project focusing on the social consequences of the growing market of gambling industries by comparison of two different models of gambling (France and China). He developed a model to understand how the responsible gambler is governed and what are the social dynamics that are shaping that consumer with the objective to develop better CSR initiatives and find new ways to reduce the risks and harms caused by gambling.

Dr Sebastian Heidebrecht

“Governing the European Digital Single Market: Effective and Democratic?”

Finally, Sebastian Heidebrecht’s presentation traced the policies and changes that have taken place over the years and ended with the outstanding question on how the European digital economy can be governed effectively and democratically, arguing that the answer requires a new analysis of the relationship between the market and the state in the digital age.

The three-hour webinar, managed by Nahomé Triballier, was also an opportunity to present the new coordinator of EU*Asia Institute Silke Leukefeld. 21 people attended the seminar, which according to the director of the EU*Asia Institute, Thomas Hoerber, is a sign of interest in the research presented.
