AIMS AND RATIONALE

Sustainable Development and sustainability have become key concepts even controversial “buzz words” in political life, at least since the publication of the Brundtland Report in 1987. Since then, research has expanded extensively on sustainability-related issues across all (social sciences) disciplines.

In this workshop we seek to reflect on research done over past decades: What have have learned about sustainability, what have been key methodological and conceptual challenges to understanding sustainable development?

Arguably, our way of researching sustainability has changed over time. Thus, we also seek to take a fresh look at the current state of sustainability research, focusing on (new) concepts, research methods and designs. Especially the availability of more and greater data sets as well as AI have a potential impact on sustainability research.

How do new tools and methods help understanding the drivers and barriers of sustainable development in Europe and beyond? What are (new) challenges, topics and questions we should consider as researchers of sustainability?

We invite papers reflecting on these issues, including best practices across all (social science) disciplines. We are open to all methodological approaches and research designs (i.e., qualitative and quantitative).
All papers selected for the workshop will be considered for publication in the upcoming Routledge Handbook on Sustainability (or Routledge Studies on the Governance of Sustainability in Europe.)
